World War II Showed Us Appeasement Can't Work

In a December 1940 fireside chat prior to America's entry in World War II, President Franklin Roosevelt warned that "American appeasers" of Adolf Hitler "ignore the warning" found in the fate of already invaded European countries. These appeasers "seek to stir up suspicion and dissension, to cause internal strife" and "to reawaken long slumbering racist and religious enmities." Their purpose is "to divide us into hostile groups and destroy our unity."

Roosevelt pleaded with Americans to support Great Britain and her allies who are "the spearhead of resistance to world conquest" and are "puttng up a fight which will live forever in the story of human gallantry."

Those who are defending themselves "do not ask us to do their fighting," the president said. "They ask us for the implements of war, which will enable them to fight for their liberty and for our security."

Roosevelt urged us to provide "every ounce and every ton of munitions and supplies that we can possibly spare to help the defenders who are in the front lines."

Needless to say, history's repeating itself in 2024.

The Republican representatives who shamefully oppose immediate aid to Ukraine are appeasing Russian President Vladimir Putin and puttng the entire world at risk.
